Field Borders

Field borders are strips of perennial vegetation that are established at the edges of fields that are used as travel lanes or turn rows. The vegetation maintains a constant cover over these areas and protects it from erosion that might otherwise result from constant use. These vegetated borders also serve to enhance wildlife habitat and reduce competition from adjacent woodlands on agricultural fields.

Unlike filter strips, field borders can be composed of either herbaceous species or shrubs and can be used by machinery. If the concern lies more in protecting adjacent water bodies or other environmentally sensitive areas from nutrient and sediment runoff, then filter strips are the more appropriate practice.
