Conservation Cover

Conservation cover is native Maryland or introduced non-invasive vegetation that has been established and maintained permanently to protect soil and water resources. Lands that have been retired from agricultural production or lands entered into conservation programs sponsored by government agencies and private organizations are candidates for conservation cover.

Areas primarily intended for forage production or timber harvesting are not eligible for this practice. Areas on slopes that are eroding critically, field edges, or riparian areas are candidates for other conservation practices but are not suitable for conservation cover. Benefits of this practice include reduced soil erosion and sedimentation in adjacent water bodies and enhanced wildlife habitat.
