Prescribed Grazing

Prescribed grazing is the practice of managing grazing livestock on pasture lands to maintain and/or improve the health and vigor of the plant communities and meet the basic needs of the livestock.

Rotating livestock through several pastures to allow vegetation to rest and recuperate is one common method of maintaining a healthy vegetative cover. In addition, the siting of livestock feeding, handling and watering facilities should be designed to improve animal distribution and minimize livestock impact to the groundcover.

Supplemental feed and/or mineral requirements should be balanced with the forage consumption to meet the nutritional requirements of the specific animals.

Other considerations to take into account include shelter for pastured animals and other purposes of the land to be maintained including recreational and wildlife values.
