The Soil Conservation District (SCD) is a statewide political subdivision as a public body exercising public powers to educate and assist landowners implementing soil conservation practices and techniques. The District is governed by a Board of five Supervisors and and three Assistant Supervisors and is supported by a staff of eight employees. These employees are funded by the County, State and Federal Governments.

The Soil Conservation Program includes the following functions:

  • agricultural soil and water quality conservation planning aids in minimizing nonpoint source pollution through the voluntary participation in, and implementation of, these plans, public information/ education to schools, youth/ adult groups and organizations
  • program administration/training and development support to the Soil Conservation District and the Montgomery Soil Conservation District Board of Supervisors

Some of the programs offered by the SCD in Montgomery County are:

  • Cost Share Programs for Implementation of Soil Conservation Plans
  • Best Management Practices (BMPs) - Grassed waterways, manure storage structures, etc.
  • Envirothon - Academic contest for county high schools
  • Urban Storm Water Mgmt. Plan review for Cities of Rockville and Gaithersburg
