Pasture and Hay PlantingThe objective of pasture and hay planting is to establish a healthy and productive stand of hay grasses and/or legumes to provide forage for grazing animals or hay for livestock. Appropriate species selection for the livestock and intended use is essential for success. In addition, soil testing can determine the need for adjustments in pH and nutrient applications so that the maximum yields can be achieved without over-fertilization. Undesirable grasses or weeds should be controlled before planting the desire species so that competition between the two is minimized. It is also possible to renovate existing pastures and hayfields by drilling into existing vegetation, tilling and reseeding the entire area, or frost seeding, depending on the species to be introduced. Management of the seedlings during and after establishment is essential for the longevity of a healthy crop. Mowing, rotational grazing, and herbicide treatment are techniques which may be necessary to maintain a healthy pasture or hayfield.
